Game Preview
It has been a challenging route to the FIFA World Cup for Jamaica, as they have dropped into the playoffs after finishing second in the CONCACAF Group B standings.
Rudolph Speid will take interim control of the team, as they bid to bounce back to winning form after playing out draws in their last two competitive fixtures. However, Jamaica have been more competitive in their friendlies so far this year, winning without conceding against Grenada and Martinique.
A strong squad has been named for the playoffs, including Aston Villa star Leon Bailey, Birmingham City’s Demarai Gray, and Jamal Lowe of Sheffield Wednesday. Jamaica will be dreaming of reaching the World Cup for just the second time in their history.
Johann Sidaner will be hoping that New Caledonia can achieve an unlikely target of reaching the World Cup for the first time in their history. The small nation sits 150th in the FIFA rankings, and they dropped into the playoffs after losing 3-0 in the OFC Third Round final against New Zealand.
Confidence can be taken from their recent form, winning each of their last two, which includes a notable success in a friendly against USSA Vertou earlier this year. However, they may lack the quality within their squad to compete at this level, as they don’t boast any players from major European or international leagues.
Jamaica vs. New Caledonia Picks
There would have been disappointment that Jamaica have dropped into this playoff round, but they should have the quality to book a final with DR Congo next week.
