Event Preview
One of the most prestigious awards handed out to sportspeople from Britain and Northern Ireland will be handed out in Manchester, England, on Thursday. The historic BBC Sports Personality of the Year was first handed out back in 1954, and since then, 67 winners from 17 sports have been honored.
Rory McIlroy will be a hot favorite to win the award for the first time in 2025 after completing the Career Grand Slam with success at The Masters. His season continued to reach new heights after starring in a hostile environment to lead Team Europe to Ryder Cup success. McIlroy ended the campaign with a seventh Race to Dubai championship.
Lando Norris is one of Britain’s most popular sports stars, and he fulfilled a lifelong dream in early December after capturing the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship for the first time. Norris trailed Oscar Piastri by 34 points earlier in the season, but would eventually come out on top in a thrilling three-way fight in Abu Dhabi.
Luke Littler is nominated for the second straight year after becoming the youngest world champion in darts history in 2025. The 18-year-old has continued to dominate, winning the World Matchplay to complete the PFC Triple Crown.
England’s EURO-winning squad will be represented, with Chloe Kelly netting the important winning penalty in the shootout success against Spain. Hannah Hampton is also nominated from the team after being named the world’s best female goalkeeper.
The shortlist is rounded off by the inspirational Ellie Kildunne. She was the starring player in the England Women’s World Cup-winning campaign, scoring five tries.
BBC Sports Personality of the Year Pick
Rory McIlroy looks to be the logical choice to win the award in 2025. The legendary golfer achieved the ultimate success at Augusta earlier this year and was part of Team Europe’s legendary success on U.S. soil in the Ryder Cup.
