Competitive ice hockey action at the Winter Olympics continues in Milan on Feb 12, as Switzerland bid to get off to a perfect start when they clash with France. However, in truth, both nations are likely fighting for second spot in the Group A standings behind Canada.
Patrick Fischer’s Swiss should be respected in their own right, as they are currently ranked as the third-best nation in the world. However, despite their improved performances on the global stage, Switzerland have finished no better than third at the Olympics, with their most recent bronze being achieved in 1948.
But, confidence levels should be high after achieving one of their best ever results at the World Championships last summer after winning the silver medal. They are unlikely to have the depth in their roster to challenge Canada and the USA for gold, but a third-place finish could be a realistic target.
France will be the huge outsiders to progress from Group A, despite showing progress under Renaud Jacquin. The French will be making their first appearance at the Winter Olympics since finishing 14th at the 2002 Games.
But, a sign of their shortcomings at the very highest level can be indicated after being knocked out in the preliminary round in the last four editions of the World Championships.
