Match Preview

While all the attention may be on the super showdown between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz on Friday, it could be argued that the most intriguing semi-final at Roland Garros will see Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev lock horns. The latter has reached the semi-final stage in each of the two previous editions of the tournament, and looks to be a Grand Slam winner in waiting.

Zverev’s return to form continued on Wednesday, as the German was excellent in his quarterfinal showdown against Tomas Etcheverry. The former Olympic medallist won 76% of the points on his first serve, and converted from five of eleven break point opportunities. His reputation at Roland Garros is very difficult to overlook.

Casper Ruud was our tip to win the French Open at the beginning of the tournament, and the Norwegian has been in excellent form throughout his run to this stage of the Grand Slam. Ruud delivered his best performance of the tournament in the previous round, as he defeated the talented Holger Rune in four sets.

Ruud was excellent on the back foot in that match, as he lost just one from seven break point opportunities. Meanwhile, he smashed down a total of 123 winners, and won 72% of points on his first serve, and 67% of the points on his second. Last year, he reached the final at the French Open, and he looks challenging to overlook achieving that feat once again in 2023.

French Open Predictions

The betting highlights how close this match-up is. Overall, the stars have met on three previous occasions, with Zverev holding a narrow 2-1 advantage. However, we have been behind Ruud throughout the tournament, and it is a slight surprise that he isn’t listed as the favorite on Friday, given his performance levels throughout the French Open.
