A close contest will take place in the men’s draw on Friday, as 14th seed Cameron Norrie takes on 17th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Despite being seeded higher, Norrie is the unfavored player in the betting for this third-round clash. The 27-year-old managed to escape his first-round showdown following a straight set win, before eliminating a second French player in the previous round, Lucas Pouille, in straight sets.

Lorenzo Musetti has been in excellent form over the opening two rounds of the tournament, and he is yet to drop a set in both matches. Earlier this year, he booked his spot in the third round after beating Alexander Shevchenko, dropping just four games. The Italian won the previous clash between the sides, and we could see him reaching the fourth round for the second time in three years.

Carlos Alcaraz remains the favorite to win the French Open, but he will face his biggest test to date on Friday under the lights at Roland Garros. The Spanish star avoided a slight scare in the previous round, as he eventually came through with a 3-1 sets win over Taro Daniel. Alcaraz certainly appears to be warming to the task in Paris.

Denis Shapovalov is an incredibly talented player, but I’d be keen to argue that clay isn’t the surface that we see the best from him. He has only made it past the second round on two occasions since 2018. In the same time, he has reached the last eight in the other three Grand Slams. Therefore, Alcaraz looks the solid play on Friday.

Preview

There are just eight women’s matches in the third round on Friday, but the standout match will see American third-seed Jessica Pegula take on Elise Mertens. The American made lightwork of Camila Giorgi in the second round, as she breezed through after just one set. She looks a solid chance to at least match her run to the quarterfinals last year.

However, Elise Mertens is an incredibly competitive player on the WTA Tour. She battled through a grueling match with Camila Osorio earlier this week, but she will need to limit the number of unforced errors. Mertens has only reached the fourth round of the French Open on two previous occasions, but she does boast a strong win-rate of 70%. We expect a three-set thriller on Friday, with Pegula eventually coming through.
