Sinner was ruthless in Shanghai, beating all but one of his rivals in straight sets. The only one who avoided that was Etcheverry in the second round. An impressive performance was against Daniil Medvedev, who got trashed, winning just four games.
World No.1 cemented that spot in the rankings by beating Tomas Machac 2-0 in the semis. It was 6-4, 7-5 in a tough and demanding event, which eventually saw Sinner rise to the occasion when needed.
Novak did beat Taylor Fritz in the semis, though he felt some discomfort in his left leg and hip. That’s the Serbian’s biggest issue now. Despite we saw him dispatching the American in straight sets, one of the all-time GOATs showed signs of vulnerability.
Yet, Djokovic’s mental strength is what separates him from all the other players and what helps him overcome rough situations. He was down 3-5 in the tiebreak, but managed to come back, defended the set point, and eventually beat Fritz.
