History of the Academy Awards

As one of the world’s most prestigious awards ceremonies, it is unsurprising that the event dates back to 1929.

However, the scale of the event has grown since its inaugural staging, with just 270 people being in attendance at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to see ‘Wings’ pick up the award for Best Picture. Since then, more awards have been added to the program, including Best Actor and Best Actress, with Best Foreign Language Film handed out for the first time in 1948.

The accolade for Best Animated Film was first handed out in 2002, with ‘Shrek’ winning the top prize. But, the Best Picture accolade remains the most prestigious, ensuring that it is the final award of the night to be handed out.

Academy Awards: Best Picture Winners

The Academy Award for Best Picture was first handed out in 1929, with movies released in 1927 and 1928 eligible. The inaugural award was won by war-epic ‘Wings’. However, the name of the feature award has changed throughout time, with a full rundown of the previous names found below:

  • Academy Award for Outstanding Picture (1927-1929)
  • Academy Award for Outstanding Production (1929-1940)
  • Academy Award for Outstanding Motion Picture (1941-1943)
  • Academy Award for Best Motion Picture (1944-1961)
  • Academy Award for Best Picture (1962-Present)

As the most anticipated award on the Hollywood calendar, there have been various controversies throughout history. Among those include the award won by The Greatest Show on Earth, regarded as the worst winner of the accolade in history. Other criticised decisions include Shakespeare in Love’s win over Saving Private Ryan in 1999 and the nomination of Emilia Perez.

Many of the hot favorites for success in 2027 are yet to be released, including Wild Horse Nine, which stars John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi, and Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson.
