Event Preview
All eyes will be on Royal Portrush this weekend, as the final major of the golf season is staged in Northern Ireland. The Open Championship has been one of the most important events on the golf schedule since it was introduced in 1860, with the winner being awarded the ‘Champion Golfer of the Year’ accolade.
Players will compete across 7,381 yards this weekend at the par 71 event, and a field of 156 stars will be competing for the illustrious major success at Royal Portrush. Shane Lowry will have fond memories of the event after winning at the same venue in 2019, and he could hold interesting claims to repeat the feat.

Lowry will be well-rested after being absent since finishing in T45 at the Travelers Championship at the end of June. Many of the leading contenders this weekend warmed up for the major by playing in the Scottish Open. A memorable finish to the event saw American Chris Gotterup finish two shots clear of the field.
However, it was a strong weekend for two of the main contenders for The Open. Rory McIlroy returned to form with an excellent T2, but he likely missed opportunities in the back nine to close the gap and win the event. Scottie Scheffler also finished nine-under to take T8.
Jon Rahm could also be an interesting player worth considering. He finished in eleventh at the 148th Open at Portrush, and has finished in the top 12 on his last three appearances on the Tour. Meanwhile, he has finished in the top ten in each of the last two editions of The Open.
The Open Championship Picks
I’m hot on the idea of following form lines from the previous Open held at Portrush, and one star that arrives in excellent form of Tommy Fleetwood. The Englishman narrowly missed out on a first PGA Tour win when taking second at the Travelers Championship, and he finished a close second at Portrush when it last held The Open in 2019.
