Race Preview

Hot on the heels of the 2000 Guineas, the British Classic action continues on Sunday, as it will be the turn of the fillies in the 1000 Guineas. Aidan O’Brien has a strong record in the race, winning three of the last seven editions, and the betting is dominated by his contenders.

Precise looks like a very high-quality filly, and she has already proven her ability at the track after winning the G1 Fillies’ Mile over course and distance last season. She has won four from five lifetime starts, but Ryan Moore will likely be aboard for the first time.

True Love gives O’Brien a fascinating second contender. The three-year-old handles the track after winning over six furlongs at Newmarket last year, before she found the ground too fast at the Breeders’ Cup. Crucially, she has a recent run under her belt, winning the G3 Priory Belle.

Abashiri represents last year’s winning combination of William Buick and Charlie Appleby. However, the filly is yet to make a start on the turf, with her only win coming on the all-weather at Kempton.

Venetian Sun is my second choice this weekend for the red-hot Karl Burke team. The filly ticks plenty of the trend boxes, including having four career starts and a previous win in group company. She got the better of the talented Gstaad in France last year, and showed excellent ability when landing the G2 Duchess of Cambridge. Had excuses in the G1 Moyglare when finishing a tired third and having no room to make her effort.

1000 Guineas Picks

Karl Burke could hold the winner this weekend, but it may come in the form of outsider Evolutionist. The three-year-old by 2000 Guineas winner Night of Thunder made a striking return to the track at Longchamp last month, beating Narissa by two lengths over a mile.

Was only just beaten in the G1 Fillies’ Mile last year, but has winning course and distance form. Stays the mile, and the recent run is a major plus.
