All of the focus on May 2 will be on the 2026 Kentucky Derby, but the high-quality Classic racing kicks off earlier in the day on British turf, with the first of five standout races for horses aged three in the United Kingdom comes in the form of the G1 2000 Guineas from Newmarket.

This race could be an early indicator toward some main contenders for either the Breeders’ Cup Mile or Breeders’ Cup Turf later in the season. Find the odds and our picks here.

Race Preview

Exciting flat racing action kicks off the British Classic calendar on Saturday, as the 2000 Guineas looks like a wide-open affair. Much like the Kentucky Derby, where you can find our picks here, a case can be made for many of the runners involved.

Charlie Appleby has won each of the last two editions, and three of the previous four. Therefore, his contenders deserve huge respect. Distant Storm was well beaten when third in the G1 Dewhurst over course and distance, but was a winner in Group Three company prior.

King’s Trail also represents the Appleby yard, but will be making his turf debut on Saturday. James Doyle takes the ride on the contender who opened his account under rules with a win on the all-weather at Kempton.

Bow Echo is the market leader for this weekend’s race, with Billy Loughnane chasing his first Classic win on British turf. The three-year-old was excellent throughout last season, winning on all three starts, including over course and distance when landing the G2 Royal Lodge.

However, the fact that five of the last 12 winners of the race have had a run is a major concern. Oxagon was the winner of the G3 Craven on his return, showing his ability at the track. The John & Thady Gosden yard is in excellent form, and Oisin Murphy is typically a man for the big occasion.

2000 Guineas Picks

It isn’t a vintage renewal of the 2000 Guineas this weekend, meaning that I’m prepared to side with a contender at a price. Needle Match represents the in-form William Haggas yard. He looked as though he wanted further when making a slow start and racing too free on his return when fourth in the G3 Greenham.

Has previously recorded a win under rules, making a successful debut at Newbury last year when beating a next-time-out winner. The selection is by Night Of Thunder, who won the 2000 Guineas in 2014, while he has since sired Desert Flower, who won the 1000 Guineas in 2025.
