Event Preview

The prestigious G1 Acorn Stakes headlines the card at Saratoga on Friday, with the final leg of the Triple Tiara being contested since 1931. This weekend’s race will see the field compete over 1 1/16 miles, and a talented field of seven will go to post.

However, this weekend could be Good Cheer’s opportunity to stamp her authority on the fillies division. The three-year-old for trainer Brad Cox was sensational at Churchill Downs last month, landing the Kentucky Oaks in a common canter. The victory extended her unbeaten sequence to seven races, which already includes five victories in stakes company. Hard to knock any of her form, and she looks like a rock-solid favorite.

I had high hopes for La Cara at Churchill Downs last month, but nothing ever felt like it was going right for the Mark Casse-trained runner. She eventually faded tamely and finished back in ninth. A better run will see her emerge as an interesting angle for Exotic players, as is Quickick, who finished sixth at Churchill Downs.

However, Shred The Gnar could be the most fascinating newcomer to the Classics this weekend. The Brian Lynch runner was an excellent second earlier in the season and has now won once from two starts. She could still be improving, but a massive step up will be required to overthrow Good Cheer.

Look Forward may be the most interesting outsider. After finishing well behind Quietside and La Cara in stakes company over extended miles, she dropped back to seven furlongs in excellent style to win the G2 Eight Belles. But, whether she wants this far remains a concern.

Acorn Stakes Picks

Good Cheer comes out on top based on every metric available. The Cox-trained filly was sensational at Churchill Downs in the Oaks, and she should have the measure of these rivals in the Acorn. She will need another career-best, but there is every chance that she is still improving, and she could develop into a strong Breeders’ Cup Distaff chance.
