Race Preview
The G1 Alabama Stakes will feature the best three-year-old’s in the U.S. this weekend, as Kentucky Oaks champion Good Cheer makes her return to the track. This weekend’s race is a notable prep ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in November, but which runner will further their credentials?
Good Cheer, for trainer Brad Cox, is the logical place to start. The three-year-old was sensational when landing the Oaks in May, but she was below that standard on her previous effort when beaten nine lengths by La Cara in the G1 Acorn. However, it is worth noting that it was her first career defeat, and a response is likely.

Nitrogen is the most interesting runner this weekend for Mark Casse. The three-year-old has won four from eight on the turf, and was only narrowly denied in the G1 Belmont Oaks last time out. However, the fact that she was beaten despite being an extremely short price is a concern. A return to dirt also raises questions.
Margie’s Intention also represents the Cox yard on Saturday. The filly has shown flashes of strong form, but this is a considerable step up in opposition following a second in the G3 Delaware Oaks. Queen Azteca is a fascinating international raider for Niels Petersen. However, she will need to come forward following a fifth in the G2 UAE Derby in April.
Alabama Stakes Picks
I’m a huge fan of Mark Casse-trained La Cara. The filly has been solid throughout this season, and had excuses when getting no luck in the Oaks. She put that run behind her last time out, and was a comfortable three-length winner from Look Forward in the G1 Acorn. She loves Saratoga, and if she gets her way from the front, she will be hard to pass.
