Race Preview
An ultra-competitive renewal of the G2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is set for Friday, with a field of ten runners involved in the Second Jewel of the Filly Triple Crown.
My Miss Mo will need to contend with a wide draw, but the Uncle Mo filly still looks hugely exciting for Saffie Joseph Jr. The three-year-old is yet to win in two starts this season, but she showed excellent ability when just two lengths behind subsequent Kentucky Oaks fifth Prom Queen in the G2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. That could be the best piece of form on offer this week.
Steven Asmussen sends Braken Poppa to the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes this weekend. The three-year-old has quickly progressed this season, and was a striking winner last time out when beating Thrill Seeker by five lengths in the Crescent City Stakes.
A.P’s Girl should also be respected for the Peter Eurton yard after an excellent second at Laurel Park in the Weber City Miss Stakes. Jumping The Gun was also involved in that prep, but finished four lengths behind her reappearing rival.
Victor Barboza-trained Majestic Lucia also brings winning form into this weekend’s Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, scoring an Equibase rating of 82 when winning an allowance optional claimer last time. However, the step up in grade is a concern.
Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Picks
Many of the main chances are drawn wide, meaning that Holly’s Holiday could be drawn best to make her challenge. The filly by Maxfield is bred to get the distance, and she represents the Kenneth McPeek stable.
She has been perfect this season, winning two from two. That includes a recent win in the Valley of the Vapors Stakes when achieving a career-best Equibase rating of 86.
