Race Preview
The G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff has been held annually at the World Championships since 1984, with the current distance of 1 1/8 miles being used since 1988. The race has created some of the most memorable finishes at the Breeders’ Cup, and high-class fillies and mares have often won the race, including Malathat and Idiomatic in the last two editions.
This year’s race has fallen apart somewhat after reigning champion Idiomatic was forced to pull out due to injury. That leaves the door wide open for the all-conquering filly Thorpedo Anna.
The Kenneth McPeek three-year-old has been the dominant filly in the U.S. this year, winning five from six starts, which includes victories against her own sex in the G1 Coaching Club, G1 Kentucky Oaks, and G1 Acorn. Her only defeat was against the boys when going down a neck against Fierceness in the G1 Travers.

Thorpedo Anna wasn’t at her sparking best when last seen winning the G1 Cotillion, but such has been her dominance, she will only likely need a repeat effort to win the Distaff this year.
Her main danger looks to come in the form of Japanese-trained Awesome Result. The four-year-old has been the dominant force in Asia this year, winning on all seven of her starts under rules. The fact that she stays longer than the Distaff trip very well is also an important factor to take into account.
Chad Browns Raging Sea is the only other likely contender this year. She has won seven from eleven under rules, and has some very strong form in the book in recent months. Among those include a battling success against Idiomatic in the G1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga.
Breeders’ Cup Distaff Picks
No denying that Thorpedo Anna is the most likely winner of the Distaff this year. I am very keen on the Exacta, with the Oaks winner finishing ahead of the Japanese raider, Awesome Result.
