Race Preview
Once again, a competitive field will go to post to compete in the Breedersโ Cup Turf Sprint in 2024. This race will be contested over five furlongs at Del Mar. Despite achieving limited success on the turf, American trainers have won each of the last three editions of the Turf Sprint.
Cogburn is a deserving favorite for the home team, and Steven Asmussen. The five-year-old has won four from eight starts in stakes company, including a dominant success in the G2 Ainsworth Turf Stakes last time out.
However, Kentucky Downs hasnโt been a happy hunting ground for potential Breedersโ Cup champions.

As expected, a talented crop of European contenders make the journey Stateside. Bradsell has been the dominant force in European sprints this season for trainer Archie Watson, winning the G1 Nunthorpe and G1 Flying Five. On both occasions, she got the better of re-appearing rival Believing.
Big Evs was a dominant winner of the Breedersโ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last season for Michael Appleby. The trainerโs form hasnโt been at the same level this term, and Big Evs has dipped in and out of form throughout 2024.
He had excuses when eighth in the G1 Nunthorpe in August, but was excellent over five furlongs when landing the G2 King George Qatar Stakes by a short head from Australian-trained Asfoora.
Breedersโ Cup Turf Sprint Picks
Iโd be happy to overlook the leading contenders in the betting this weekend, and Godolphin-owned Star Of Mystery makes the most appeal.
The Charlie Appleby runner was a winner at Saratoga in July, beating Mansa Musa by over a length in the G3 Quick Call Stakes. She tired late in the G2 Franklin Stakes at Keeneland, but dropping back to five furlongs gives her an excellent chance from a brilliant draw.
