Race Preview

Competitive Grade One action is set for Del Mar this Saturday, with fillies and mares aged three and older competing in the Clement L. Hirsch Stakes. This race has been on the schedule since 1937, and a total distance of 1 1/16 miles will be covered by the field.

A number of previous winners have later challenged for major honors at the Breeders’ Cup, with Zenyatta claiming the second of her three wins before landing the Classic. Bob Baffert has trained the winner of the race in each of the last two years, and he boasts a strong hand once again in 2025.

Seismic Beauty is the preference of Juan Hernandez, and she looks to be an upwardly progressive filly following a dominant win over a mile and one furlong at Santa Anita when beating Splendora by five lengths in the G2 Santa Margarita Stakes in May. Is unproven in Grade One company, but there’s plenty to like.

Richi ensures that Baffert has two leading chances this weekend. The five-year-old mare also holds a win over Splendora after scoring in the G2 Santa Maria Stakes in April. However, based on that form, she could still have a length to find on Seismic Beauty. Richi is also yet to prove herself over this distance in the U.S.

Kopion is a deserving favorite for the race this weekend, for trainer Richard Mandella. The four-year-old was narrowly touched off on her latest start when second behind Sweet Azteca in the G2 Great Lady M Stakes. Steps up in distance this weekend, but plenty to suggest that it could be the making of her.

Clement L. Hirsch Stakes Picks

The top selections in the betting all have questions to answer this weekend, meaning that a chance could be taken on Royal Spa for trainer Rodolphe Brisset.

The five-year-old was only narrowly beaten by superstar mare Thorpedo Anna in the G2 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs in June, and is already a winner in graded company over an extended mile after landing Grade Three honors at Churchill Downs in May.

She stays this distance very strongly, and Hector Barrios is a jockey in excellent recent form.
