Race Preview

Fascinating racing action is set for Del Mar this weekend, as a talented field of 12 fillies will line up in the Del Mar Oaks. Thought Process will be a solid contender at the top of the betting for trainer Philip D’Amato. The three-year-old was a fine winner of the G2 San Clemente Handicap over a mile last month, beating the reappearing Casalu by a length.

Casalu is the runner for Bob Baffert at Del Mar on Saturday, and connections likely would have been appeased with the filly’s run on her return to a mile. She has some solid back class to her name, which includes a win at Santa Anita in the Blue Norther Stakes.

However, the Baffert runner also has form to find on Will Then, who finished two lengths clear of her rival in the G3 Jimmy Durante Stakes. But, Casalu did finish ahead of Will Then in the G2 San Clemente Handicap last month, meaning the three runners are all closely matched on form.

Take A Breath is a runner at a bigger price worth considering this weekend. The Mark Glatt runner was a strong performer in the UK earlier this season, winning on successive starts in handicap company at Sandown and Beverley. That form looks strong, and she can’t be underestimated on her U.S. debut.

Brendan Walsh sends Lush Lips to Del Mar this weekend. Previously trained by Donnacha O’Brien, the three-year-old has caught the eye in the U.S. this season. She was only narrowly beaten by the talented Nitrogen in the G2 Edgewood, before impressive when beating Princess Attitude in the Tepin Stakes last time.

Del Mar Oaks Picks

This weekend’s race is much deeper than just the top three in the betting. At the prices, I’m keen to take a chance on Firenze Flavor. It’s best to forgive Patrick Gallagher-runner’s effort in the San Clemente Handicap last time, as she had no luck, and didn’t enjoy going back down to a mile.

Back up in distance this weekend, she boasts excellent claims after already showing great character to land the G3 Honeymoon Stakes in May.
