Race Preview
While this weekend’s Goodwood Stakes doesn’t feature any of the current leading contenders for the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, it could still be a potentially intriguing race in its own regard. Previously known as the Awesome Again, the Goodwood Stakes, will be run over 1 1/8 miles on the dirt at Santa Anita.
Full Serrano will be a red-hot contender for the John Sadler yard after continuing to show his ability on U.S. dirt this year. The six-year-old’s win in an optional claimer last time, when beating American Admiral, was incredibly impressive, and he has graded form in the book after landing the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile last year.

First Mission is a respected runner from the Brad Cox yard this weekend, but the five-year-old has been incredibly hard to predict. He was second in Grade Three company last time, but his third when two lengths behind Mindframe in the G1 Stephen Foster could yet prove to be the best piece of form in this race.
Bob Baffert’s runners always deserve special attention at Santa Anita, and Gaming is a runner that has always threatened to be smart. Mike Smith will be aboard the runner, who showcased plenty of excellent form as a juvenile last year, which included a second in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Goodwood Stakes Picks
This looks like a race that could be won by an improving type, and Nevada Beach may present value in the market. The lightly-raced runner for Bob Baffert was an excellent winner of the Los Alamitos Derby in June, beating the field by a commanding four lengths. He is unproven in this grade, but everything suggests that further improvement should be on the cards.
