Goodwood Stakes: Betting Preview
A high-quality weekend of graded action at Santa Anita is headlined by a ‘Win and You’re In’ for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. However, the race will likely serve as more of a prep for the Dirt Mile.
Nevada Beach (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) will be a leading contender at the top of the betting to repeat his success from 12 months ago. However, the four-year-old will need to contend with a long layoff, as he hasn’t been in action since finishing a disappointing 12th in the G1 Saudi Cup. He held off Full Serrano to win by a length 12 months ago, but this year’s renewal is arguably hotter.
Caldera (Paco Lopez/Saffie Joseph Jr) is a fascinating contender this weekend. The four-year-old steps back up in distance for the first time since finishing second in the Bathhouse Row. However, his form this season has been electric, smashing the track record on back-to-back starts at Colonial Downs, hitting a mighty speed figure of 127 on his latest start.
Forged Steel (Edwin Gonzalez/Saffie Joseph Jr) should also be respected. The four-year-old was last seen finishing seventh in the G1 Pacific Classic, but he was excellent on his latest start at Santa Anita when landing the G2 Hollywood Gold Cup.
Mr A.P. (Joel Rosario/Vladimir Cerin) has been lightly raced this season since finishing second in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Needs to improve after a recent ninth-place finish in the Gun Runner Stakes. However, easy to argue that Kentucky Downs didn’t suit.
McAfee (Hector Berrios/George Weaver) was back to his best when winning an allowance race last time, and holds some back class after finishing second in the G3 West Virginia Derby and fourth in last year’s G1 Travers. Original Sin (Ben Curtis/Brendan Walsh) rounds off the leading contenders and shouldn’t be dismissed after an excellent second in the G1 Pacific Classic last time out.
Goodwood Stakes Picks
Caldera very much feels like a now horse. The four-year-old has looked better than ever this season, and all roads point towards a run in this year’s Dirt Mile. He has smashed track records on his last two starts, and he looks capable of staying further in this company. Should be hard to beat if getting a clear trip, and he looks like an outstanding selection at +3000 for the Dirt Mile later this year.
