Race Preview

Interesting prep action on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is set for this Saturday, as the G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks is staged at Turfway Park. This race famously saw Rich Strike earn his berth at Churchill Downs in 2022, while Final Gambit won the race 12 months ago before running an eye-catching race at big odds in the opening leg of the Triple Crown.

Stark Contrast is a leading chance for Michael McCarthy, with the runner shipped from California after nearly causing a major upset in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. His finishing effort was better than the bare result suggests, and he is a fascinating contender after a break this weekend.

Argos is another of the runners transferring from the turf, representing last year’s winning trainer Brad Cox. The three-year-old finished eighth in the Juvenile Turf, before finishing fifth in the Colonel Liam. First start for new yard, and is equipped with first-time blinkers.

Fulleffort also represents the Cox yard this weekend. The three-year-old was narrowly denied in the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway, where his finishing effort promises that there is more to come on Saturday. Irad Ortiz is a very notable booking.

Two Out Hero could feature if making a quick start. Won two from three starts at Woodbine last year, before rallying after stumbling out of the stalls to take ninth at Turfway last time out. Black Hornet holds solid stakes form, landing the Black Gold on turf debut.

Turf Star could be one at a price that is open to improvement. Trained by Graham Motion, he has made slow starts on his last two starts, finishing sixth in the Juvenile Turf, before disappointing when sixth at Gulfstream last time.

A quicker start will make him a very serious contender. The application of blinkers only aids that argument.
