Race Preview
High quality action on the turf is set for Aqueduct this weekend, as the G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic will be staged. The field will compete over a distance of a mile and a half, with a purse of $500,000 up for grabs. There have been notable winners of the race throughout history, including Manila and Theatrical, who would both later win the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
Rebel’s Romance is a deserving favorite for the Charlie Appleby yard, with Frankie Dettori booked to take the ride. The seven-year-old is one of the best turf horses on the planet, winning 14 of his 20 career starts. His dominant season has already seen him score in Group One company in Germany, while he has exceeded expectations on home turf with wins in the G2 Hardwicke and G2 Yorkshire Cup.

Bank Frenzy is one of two interesting contenders for the home team this weekend. The five-year-old stepped up his form impressively last time out to land the Commentator Stakes at Saratoga. Meanwhile, he is a previous course winner at Aqueduct. However, a career-best run is needed on Saturday.
Le Gris is also a runner with a big reputation, but he is yet to prove his class in graded company. Redistricting deserves respect from the Chad Brown yard. Meanwhile, last year’s victor, Far Bridge, is yet to reach the same heights in 2025, and has eight lengths to find on El Cordobes based on the form of the G1 Sword Dancer.
Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Picks
Rebel’s Romance has been a star for Appleby, but the progressive stablemate El Cordobes could be the interesting play on Saturday. I have already backed the four-year-old for the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and it was hard not to have been impressed by his career-best effort last month when landing the G1 Sword Dancer, despite everything going against him in-running. There still looks to be more progression to come, and he could be very overpriced this weekend.
