Molly Pitcher Stakes: Betting Preview

For the first time since 2014, the Molly Pitcher Stakes will be run as a Grade Two this weekend. A high-quality field of seven fillies and mares will contest the race, which will be run over 1 1/16 miles.

Splendora is the obvious starting point for trainer Bob Baffert. The five-year-old is a four-time winner in stakes company, and was striking over the Molly Pitcher distance at Churchill Downs last time when beating Immersive by nearly three lengths in the G2 Shawnee Stakes. Looks like a solid contender after improving over this distance.

Alpine Princess represents the Brad Cox yard this weekend. The five-year-old will need to be forgiven for her latest effort when she just didn’t fire at Saratoga in the G1 Ogden Phipps. However, she was impressive before that effort, landing the G2 Doubledogdare at Keeneland. A return to that form will see her competitive.

Mark Casse sends Nerazurri to Monmouth this weekend, and she should be respected after posting a career-best effort to land the Lady Jacqueline Stakes last time out. Further improvement required, but not unfeasible for this four-year-old.

Dry Powder comes into this off the back of a win, but a step up in performance is required. Lost Horizon could be one of the most interesting runners, with the Chad Brown daughter of Into Mischief winning the Serena’s Song by an impressive eight lengths at Monmouth last time.

Molly Pitcher Stakes Picks

While this may appear to be a competitive race, Splendora has the ability to blow the field away. She has progressed since being stepped up in distance, and a repeat of her run in the Shawnee Stakes will see her win the Molly Pitcher comfortably.
