New York Stakes: Betting Preview
A high-quality and fascinating renewal of the G1 New York Stakes is set for Friday. Much of the build up will focus around Gezora, who left the Chad Brown stable to join Will Mott following a disappointing reappearance after previously winning the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
The French-bred runner was excellent at the end of last season, but was disappointing in the G3 Modesty Stakes. She could be vulnerable again this weekend at a short price, as I feel that she is better over slightly further than this weekend’s distance.
Pretty Picture, City Girl, and Kathrymarissa all come into this weekend off the back of wins. The latter was excellent when beating Gezora in the G3 Modesty, and that form could be upheld on these terms, with the Mott runner carrying a penalty.
Portfolio Duration ensures that Brown holds a very strong hand this weekend, and the four-year-old by Night of Thunder lost little in defeat when beaten a neck by Classic Q in the G2 Churchill Distaff Mile Stakes last month.
Miguel Clement-trained Bellezza has always threatened to be a leading player at this level. However, she was five lengths behind Gezora at the Breeders’ Cup and well beaten on her return at Gulfstream in March. However, being back at Saratoga could enhance her chances after previously winning the G2 Flower Bowl Stakes.
New York Stakes Picks
Laurelin could be the value play at the prices this weekend. The Graham Motion filly by Zarak was a close second behind City Girl on her return in the G3 Beaugay Stakes, and she showed flashes of brilliance throughout last season, finishing second in both of the G3 Jockey Club Oaks and G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Best career effort was recorded at Saratoga, landing the G2 Saratoga Oaks in striking fashion over course and distance.
