Race Preview
The G1 Pennsylvania Derby typically throws up a very talented winner, with many recent victors having followed up with a bold showing at the Breeders’ Cup. The race will be run over nine furlongs on the dirt at Parx, and a talented field of ten runners will be involved this weekend.
Baeza looks like the obvious starting point when assessing the runners. The John Shirreffs runner has won once from seven starts, but his efforts behind Journalism and Sovereignty indicate his high level of form. That includes last time out when beaten just a length by the latter in the G2 Jim Dandy.

Goal Oriented is the runner for Bob Baffert this weekend, and he has been a high-class performer in top level company. He took his form to a new level last time out when beaten just under a length by Journalism in the G1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. He could still be improving.
Brendan Walsh’s Gosger matches up closely with Goal Oriented on the G1 Haskell form after finishing in a dead heat for second. The three-year-old also finished within a length of Journalism in the G1 Preakness Stakes in mid-May. Likely to go close once again over his preferred distance.
Pennsylvania Derby Picks
The top three in the betting all have form that ties in closely with the two standout three-year-old horses this season. However, there is a feeling that Goal Oriented could still be the progressive horse in this field. Therefore, Baffert’s runner could lead home a talented field.
