Preakness Stakes Odds, Preview, and Picks (May 17)

By · Updated 2 days ago

Hot on the heels of the Triple Crown opener at Churchill Downs, the Preakness Stakes is run two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. The middle jewel of the Triple Crown is set for Pimlico this Saturday, and a talented field of ten horses aged three will be in action in Maryland. You can find the odds and picks for the race here.

Event Preview

The second leg of the U.S. Triple Crown is set for this weekend, as a talented field of ten runners will compete over 1 3/16 miles at Pimlico in the Preakness Stakes. Unfortunately, the winner of the Kentucky Derby isn’t in action this Saturday, meaning that a Triple Crown champion won’t be crowned in 2025.

However, there will be a lot of focus on the horse that finished second at Churchill Downs, as Journalism makes a quick return to the track for Michael McCarthy. The three-year-old ran an excellent race in the Derby, but he could only finish a length behind Sovereignity, despite going off as the pre-race favorite.

American Promise and Sandman are both making quick returns to the track after finishing further down the field in the Derby. The latter is a very short price after winning the G1 Arkansas Derby, but I would be tempted to fade the runner based on his odds this weekend.

River Thames is one of the most interesting runners this weekend for Todd Pletcher. The three-year-old was an excellent second in the Fountain of Youth, and he was beaten just a neck by Sovereignity on that occasion. Connections have been incredibly patient with the three-year-old, and they could get their returns this weekend.

Preakness Stakes Picks

My top choice this weekend is Clever Again for Steven Asmussen. The Preakness has favored front-running tactics, and this three-year-old was a dominant winner of the Hot Springs Stakes using that style last time out. At a price, international raider Heart Of Honor could out-run his odds for the team of Jamie and Saffie Osbourne.
