Race Preview
One of the most important early season races for Triple Crown contenders comes at Santa Anita this weekend. However, the G3 Robert B Lewis Stakes has been prominent for throwing up runners that excel over shorter distances, evident from the last two winners being the one-two in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November.
Bob Baffert’s runners will dominate the betting this weekend, as he goes for an eighth straight win in the race. Desert Gate certainly appears to be a horse for now, as the three-year-old looks like an out-and-out miler. Was held off over further on his last start when denied by the reappearing Intrepido.
If you were to take one runner out of this race, then it would likely be the Jeff Mullins-trained Intrepido. He didn’t give his running in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile when finishing fifth. But was a dominant winner over a distance greater than a mile at Santa Anita in October. Will likely excel over further.
Plutarch could fall under the same category as Intrepido. The three-year-old was an eye-catching winner of a maiden special weight in December over 1 1/16 miles, beating a fairly talented field by four lengths. This is his starting point for the season, and he will have stronger claims over further.
