A notable weekend of action on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is set. The Sunland Park Derby is most notable for the emergence of Mine That Bird, who finished fourth at Sunland Park before shockingly winning at Churchill Downs in 2009. You can find the odds and our Sunland Park Derby picks here.

Race Preview

One of the biggest racing events on the New Mexico calendar is set for this weekend, and there is a competitive feel surrounding the 2026 Sunland Park Derby.

Express Kid will be a very warm favorite for the Justin Evans yard after a blowout success in the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes. Makes his first start for a new yard this weekend, and his workouts at the track do indicate that there could be more to come.

Bricklin will line up for Rodolphe Brisset this weekend after bypassing the Southwest Stakes. Has a very progressive profile, and was excellent on his return to action when winning over three lengths in a one-mile allowance.

Daneyko and Way Beyond represent the Riley Allison Derby form line. The former was the winner on that day for trainer Edward Kereluk, finishing strongly to get the better of his rival. This step up in grade requires a career-best effort.

Sharons Beach is the ride of John Velazquez this weekend, and the Jonathan Thomas-trained runner could be slightly overpriced. The three-year-old showed a much better attitude on his return, going down by a neck against a next-time-out winner. Form looks solid, and could be a shock contender.

Sunland Park Derby Picks

Plenty will have fighting chances in the Sunland Park Derby this weekend, but the progressive Way Beyond could reverse the form with Danyeko and get his nose in front. Was only beaten a nose in the Riley Allison Derby, but the race wasn’t run to suit, and Steven Asmussen typically sends a good one to this race.
