Race Preview

The G3 Tampa Bay Derby has been an informative prep race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby since the turn of the millennium, with both Street Sense and Super Saver lining up in the Tampa Bay prep before winning the opening leg of the Triple Crown.

Further Ado looks like a very interesting contender that is set to dominate the betting for Brad Cox, having set a blistering speed figure at Churchill Downs at the end of November when landing the G2 Jockey Club Stakes. Makes his three-year-old bow this weekend, and there’s plenty to like about this son of Gun Runner.

Gustavo Delgado sends The Puma to Tampa Bay this weekend, but the three-year-old will likely need to improve on his third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes last time to feature. However, the fitness advantage will at least give the Essential Quality colt a fighting chance.

Thunder Buck will need to improve massively after finishing last in the Lecomte Stakes last time, while Hulkamania looks better suited to the turf, and Roger That Dana will need to progress after finishing second in the Mucho Macho Man.

Powershift is a fascinating contender for Chad Bown, setting a red-hot figure when winning by 13 lengths on debut. Could be capable of taking the step up in grade in his stride. Canaletto sports a similar profile for the same yard, winning eye-catchingly at Gulfstream last time by a yawning eight-length margin.

Tampa Bay Derby Picks

It could be best to forgive Talkin’s effort in the G2 Remsen last time out, as that could have been one race too many in his juvenile campaign. Showed ability over a mile when second behind Napoleon Solo in the G1 Champagne, and has winning form over Further Ado from Saratoga last August.
