Race Preview
A high-quality renewal of the G1 Whitney Stakes is set for Saratoga this Saturday, as a talented field of ten will be aiming to join the illustrious roll of honor that includes names such as Gun Runner, Knicks Go, and Personal Ensign.
Previous Breeders’ Cup Classic winners collide this weekend, but both Sierra Leone and White Abarrio will have points to prove. The latter will have form to find on Mindframe after being beaten by his re-appearing rival in the G1 Stephen Foster Stakes at the end of last month.
White Abarrio will also be on the comeback trail, but excuses can be made following his fourth in the G1 Metropolitan Handicap, as the six-year-old clearly doesn’t excel over a mile.

Fierceness finished second in the same Grade One last time out, but he will thrive going back up in distance this weekend. The four-year-old for Todd Pletcher continues to catch the eye, and he is a sound bet at this stage to at least match his second from last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Stablemate Mindframe will likely be his most serious rival this weekend after winning three from three this season. His latest success in the Stephen Foster Stakes achieved a career-best rating, and it wouldn’t be hard to argue that he is still improving.
Highland Falls could be one of the most interesting players at a bigger price for Brad Cox. The five-year-old was excellent on his return to the track last month, beating Full Screen by over five lengths. He steps back up in distance this weekend, and he already has winning form at Saratoga after landing the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes last September.
Whitney Stakes Picks
Fierceness looks a solid bet this weekend, as he bids to extend his winning record over Sierra Leone. However, at a price, Post Time could be an interesting angle for Exotic players. The Brittany Russell runner was a strong stayer on his latest start in the Testamony Stakes at Laurel Park, and his figures indicate that he shouldn’t be that far away.
