  • The Giants were defeated by the Nationals, 11-6.
  • Arizona came up short, 5-4, against the Marlins.
  • San Francisco is 253-186 in their all-time history against the Diamondbacks.

The Giants (16-20) and the Diamondbacks (20-17) match up for an NL West clash. Arizona is fighting to stay near the top of the division, while the Giants are attempting to climb back to .500 on the season.

Game Preview

San Francisco fell to 16-20 following their loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. They’ve been streaky all season long, struggling to find consistency. Broken up into 4-game spans, their schedule has gone 1-3, 4-0, 0-4, 4-0, and 1-3 since April 18. The Giants will hope that pattern continues for a bit longer, looking to rebound in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. They need their struggling offense to get back on track.

The Diamondbacks lost 5-4 against the Marlins on Wednesday, losing the series, and dropping to 20-17 on the season. They now sit 2.5 games behind the Dodgers for 1st place in the NL West race, but are still very much in the mix. Arizona needs to avoid an extended slide here. Prior to their current stretch of 1-3, they had gone 6-2 over their last 8 games. 1B Christian Walker is having another strong season as a slugger.

Prediction

The Diamondbacks and Giants sit only a few games apart, but that narrow gap is making a major difference in their current postseason odds. With both teams needing as many wins as possible, this should be a very competitive series. For the first game, the Giants have the edge in the pitching matchup, with Alex Cobb (2.01 ERA) on the mound against Tommy Henry (5.17 ERA). I see San Francisco winning it.
