Thursday’s ten-race card has some big fields and a couple of first-time starters we really like. Here’s how we’re playing it.

Race 2: Maiden Claiming (6 Furlongs, Dirt)

City Of Rome and Martone should take most of the money in this maiden claimer, but our best bet on the whole card is the first-time starter for Steve Asmussen.

Mission Achieved is a Midshipman colt making his debut for one of the biggest barns in the country, and Tyler Gaffalione, who’s riding as well as anyone right now, has the mount. Asmussen wins with first-time starters in sprints at a strong clip, and he doesn’t drop a debut runner into a claiming race by accident. At 5-1 on the morning line, we think he’s an overlay.

Race 8: Maiden Special Weight (5 Furlongs, Turf)

When Wesley Ward sends out a debut filly in a five-furlong turf sprint, you pay attention. Nobody in America is better at getting young horses ready to fire first time out on the grass, and he’s coming off a big weekend after Bacio won the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland on October 31.

Swirlin Mischief is by Into Mischief, one of the top sires in the country and a stallion known for passing on speed, which is exactly what you want going five furlongs. Turf on debut is the only question mark, but that’s where Ward’s record does the talking. At 9-2, she’s our value play of the day, and she could be one to follow into 2027.

How to Bet on Our Churchill Downs Picks

Want to play along? These racebooks all accept US players and offer every bet you need at Churchill Downs, from win, place, and show to exactas, trifectas, and the late Pick 5. Here’s how to get started.

Racebooks Are Separate From the Sportsbook

At most online betting sites, horse racing doesn’t sit inside the main sportsbook. It has its own section, usually called the Racebook or simply Horses, and you’ll find it in the top navigation bar or the main menu. That’s where you’ll find every track running today, including Churchill Downs, along with the full card, the morning line, and the live odds.

Racebook Bonuses Are Different Too

Because the racebook is run separately, it usually has its own welcome offers, and they work differently from the sports bonuses. Instead of a deposit match, you’ll typically get a risk-free bet on your first horse racing wager, or a rebate that pays back a percentage of what you bet, win or lose. A rebate adds up fast if you’re playing the races every day. Make sure you pick the racebook offer when you sign up, because a sportsbook bonus usually can’t be used on the horses.

How to Place Your Bet

  1. Pick a racebook from the table below and create your account.
  2. Make your first deposit and choose the horse racing welcome offer.
  3. Click into the Racebook section from the navigation bar.
  4. Select Churchill Downs, then the race you want to bet.
  5. Choose your horse and your bet type, enter your stake and confirm.

Before you lock anything in, check for late scratches and the live odds. The morning line is only the track’s estimate, and prices can move a lot before the gate opens.
