What’s Next for the Breeders’ Cup 2026 Champions?
Some of this year’s champions have run their last race, while others are only just getting started. Here’s where the biggest names are heading in 2027
Swansong Wins for Breeders’ Cup Champions
There were perfect swansong wins at Keeneland for several horses now heading to stud, notably Ways And Means in the Filly & Mare Sprint, Benvenuto Cellini in the Turf, and Sovereignty in the Classic.
Sovereignty’s win was the standout moment of the two-day meeting, with the Bill Mott-trained colt proving his superstardom on his final run by beating Forever Young and Knightsbridge in excellent fashion. Forever Young was our best bet for the Classic and ran a huge race in defeat, but nothing was beating Sovereignty on the day. Notable Speech, the defending Mile champion, was also retired after running a gallant second on Saturday.
Exciting Kentucky Derby Picture Set
Hughes was one of the standout winners on Future Stars Friday, and he was an immediate market mover in the Kentucky Derby betting. His dominant win in the Juvenile saw him finish clear of American History and Salahudin, and all eyes will quickly turn to a potential showdown with U.S.S. Valor on the first Saturday in May.
Emphatic lived up to her name in the Juvenile Fillies, showing a breathtaking kick on the final turn to get the better of Miss Monica. Both fillies will be back for 2027, and both are likely to rank among the leaders for the Kentucky Oaks.
Sun Goddess Heads the Betting for the 1,000 Guineas
The superstar performance on Future Stars Friday may well have come in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, where Sun Goddess lived up to her reputation. Aidan O’Brien has called her the best juvenile filly he has ever trained, and she won a third Grade/Group One with ease. She’s expected back in 2027, and she currently heads the betting for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
There was double delight for O’Brien on the turf on Friday, as Haffner got first run on the field to beat the fast-finishing Folsom Blues in the Juvenile Turf. Folsom Blues was our Friday best bet and was closing fast at the line, and he’s one to follow next year. Of the two, he is the shorter price to win the 2,000 Guineas next May, widely available around +1400.
Nitrogen Sets Her Sights on the Classic
One of the most interesting comments after Championship Saturday came from Mark Casse, who confirmed that Nitrogen will stay in training in 2027 and could be aimed at the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The four-year-old filly was easily the best in the Distaff, finishing two lengths clear of Fully Subscribed.
Taking on the boys again would make her a fascinating contender, especially after finishing within four lengths of Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Whitney earlier this year. If she follows that route, Nitrogen would be bidding to become only the second filly to win the Classic, after Zenyatta in 2009. Before then, Casse has indicated that we’re likely to see her next in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park.
Sprint Stars Set for Overseas Targets
Two of the most impressive winners on Championship Saturday came in the sprints. T O Elvis was a memorable winner for Japan in the Sprint, chasing down Englishman to record the second-highest Beyer Speed Figure of the meeting. No next race has been announced yet, but the four-year-old could well head to the Middle East early in 2027.
Bacio was also a devastating winner of the Turf Sprint, following up his Group One success in the UK. Wesley Ward has already said overseas targets are on the agenda, with the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes in Australia in February teased as a dream target.
