Fight Preview
Derrick Lewis is rightly regarded as one of the greatest UFC stars in history, holding records for the most knockouts in the heavyweight division. However, the American will be the massive outsider when he takes on former LFA Heavyweight champion Waldo Cortes-Acosta on Saturday.
Despite being 40, Lewis has still continued to fight at a very high standard. That was reflected last July when he beat Tallison Teixeira in the first-round to make UFC history. The victory was his second straight win, marking a welcome return to form. Another win on Saturday could put him in line for a title shot.
However, the increased pressure will likely be on the fifth-ranked heavyweight in the UFC this weekend. Cortes-Acosta has quickly made a name for himself, showing his knockout power by winning eight of his 16 fights via KO/TKO.
This is a fascinating challenge for the aspiring champion after landing a quick-fire KO double in November last year, gaining Performance of the Night honors for first-round wins over Ante Delija and Shamil Gaziev. This is a step up in opposition, but a dominant showing will see him emerge as a leading title hope.
Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Derrick Lewis Picks
Lewis has continued to be a dominant force in the heavyweight division, while Cortes-Acosta has shown his knockout power with dominant wins at the end of last year. It could come down to whichever fighter lands the killer blow, but an early knockout can’t be dismissed.
