Jared Cannonier (17-6) made his middleweight debut in 2018 and is 7-2 since, with wins over such elite opponents as Anderson Silva, Sean Strickland, and Marvin Vettori. He also fought against Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya (in a title fight), who beat him by decision after five rounds of fighting.

Obviously, he’s got a wonderful portfolio, but the problem is that he’s already 40. This means that he doesn’t have much time to challenge for the title again.

The thing is that the winner of the Robert Whittaker vs. Khamzat Chimaev fight in Saudi Arabia will get to fight Dricus du Plessis for the title. Then, there’s also Sean Strickland who’s also looking to fight for the title in the future.

All this means that the chance the UFC will let Cannonier challenge for the championship belt is very slim. This goes especially if he loses to Nassourdine Imavov (13-4-1) in Louisville. But if he wins with a spectacular knockout, anything is possible.
