Match Preview
A lot of questions were posed of Mauricio Pochettino before the start of the Gold Cup, and the intensity was ramped up following a public fallout with captain Christian Pulisic. However, huge credit must be given to the coach, as the team has progressed through the tournament this summer with few moments of concern.
The U.S. booked their spot in the final with a blistering showing in the semi-finals against Guatemala, scoring twice inside the opening 15 minutes. In Pulisic’s absence, Diego Luna has seized his chances, with the forward netting both efforts in the 2-1 success on Wednesday.

Mexico’s dominant record in the Gold Cup deserves a lot of respect this weekend. The national team has contested each of the last three finals, winning on two occasions. In fact, they have only missed two finals since the end of the 2005 tournament.
Like the U.S., Mexico has also been reliable throughout the Gold Cup this summer. But, they were forced to be patient in the semi-final clash against Honduras on Thursday evening. However, they were eventually able to break down their resilient rivals, with Raul Jimenez netting the winner five minutes into the second half.
Head-to-Head Record
Mexico and the USA last met in the Gold Cup final in 2021, with the U.S. recording a 1-0 success. Recent internationals between the nations have also been tense affairs. Mexico recorded a 2-0 victory in the last match in October 2024, while the U.S. are winless against their opponents since 2021.
USA vs. Mexico Picks
A tense final is set for Houston this weekend, and cases can be made for both national sides. However, the narrow preference is for Mexico, who have regularly risen to the occasion when the pressure has intensified in the Gold Cup.
