Match Preview
The defending Gold Cup champions will be aiming to retain their title this summer, and in truth, they shouldn’t encounter too many issues in Group A.
Despite a recent defeat against Switzerland, Javier Aguirre’s side have been in excellent form this calendar year, winning three of their four official matches.
That included a success over Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League final. Mexico has been the dominant team in recent Gold Cup history, winning five of the last eight editions, and losing just twice across their last 18 fixtures in the competition.

Suriname’s pedigree in the competition couldn’t be more contrasting. The lowly-ranked nation didn’t qualify for the previous edition of the Gold Cup, and they are playing at the tournament for just the second time since 1985. Suriname have won just one of their 12 matches at the Gold Cup.
However, confidence could be gained from their recent run of form, as they had avoided defeat in their four matches before the start of the competition. But, the opponents that they will come up against this summer are ranked significantly higher than those that they have faced previously in 2025.
Head-to-Head Record
Mexico holds the upper hand based on recent meetings, having won each of the last two internationals between the sides. Their most recent victory was a 2-0 success in March 2023 in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Suriname vs. Mexico Picks
Mexico will be challenging to beat at this summer’s Gold Cup, and they should cruise through Group A with minimum fuss. We fully expect them to claim a straightforward win this week, and they could register victory by at least a two-goal margin.
