Event Preview
A huge showdown awaits for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday, as the Blues bid to bounce back to winning ways following a defeat at Newcastle last Sunday. Enzo Maresca’s side will have no available number nine this weekend, as Nicolas Jackson was sent off last week, and Christopher Nkunku has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to injury.
Last weekend’s defeat against Newcastle was a damaging blow to Chelsea’s hopes of playing in the Champions League next season. Despite the loss, the Blues remain fifth in the standings, which would be enough to gain qualification this term. The Red Devils have suffered defeats in four of their last five Premier League matches, despite having scored seven goals across two ties with one of the best defensive teams in Europe in the Europa League.
Ruben Amorim’s side have continued to make unwanted history throughout this season. United’s 2-0 home defeat against West Ham last Sunday was their ninth loss of the campaign at Old Trafford. Only in three previous campaigns have they ever lost as many home fixtures.
Chelsea have avoided defeat in their last two league matches against Man United. However, their home win last season was their first victory against the Red Devils since November 2017. Six of the last nine matches between Chelsea and United have ended in draws.
