Match Preview

The culmination of the dreams of the 22 players involved in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday could be close to becoming a reality. However, only eleven players will achieve the ultimate dream of becoming world champions with their nation.

England have been the favorites for success since the elimination of the USWNT, and the Lionesses have grown into the tournament in excellent fashion since the group stages. They produced their best performance at the tournament in the semi-final, as Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo found the net in a 3-1 win over Australia. The reigning EURO champions defended excellently throughout that match, and were great value to book their first ever appearance in the Women’s World Cup final.

Victory saw England become only the second nation to beat the host country in the semi-final stage, while they are now unbeaten in their last 19 matches at the competition when they have opened the scoring. However, they will face a very different challenge against a talented Spanish side.

Spain needed to show every ounce of their character in their final four showdown against Sweden, as they took the lead with nine minutes remaining, before being dragged level in the 88th minute. However, they weren’t to be denied their first spot in the final, as Olga Carmona netted the winner in the 89th minute. Their progression this year has been staggering, as they had won just once in seven Women’s World Cup matches before this year’s tournament got underway.

Spain vs England Prediction

Spain were hugely unfortunate to lose to England at last summer’s EUROs, and we believe that the lessons that they learnt from that defeat will get them over the line this weekend. We put up Spain as our pre-tournament pick, and we aren’t going to sway away from that selection now.
