In truth, Germany was slightly overlooked in the outright betting for World Cup success this summer, as many read too much into their warm-up loss against Zambia. However, it is often challenging to rule out the team at major tournaments, as Germany chase a third World Cup honor. They certainly appeared to be a nation with a point to prove in their opening match at the competition.
One player with more to prove than most is Alexandra Popp, as the striker was forced to sit out last summer’s EURO final due to injury. She immediately laid down her marker for the tournament ahead on Monday, as she netted twice in the opening 40 minutes against Morocco.
