Game Preview
A date with destiny arrives for both the USA and Canada on Feb 22, as the famous ice hockey nations collide in the Gold Medal Game at the Winter Olympics. For the U.S., there will be additional pressure on Mike Sullivan’s side, as they bid to win a first gold medal in the sport since 1980.
However, the USA have looked stronger as the tournament has progressed, making lightwork of a talented Slovakia in the semi-finals on Friday. Jack Hughes was once again the standout star for the NHL-stacked roster, scoring twice in the 6-2 win.
The win over Slovakia came just a few days after the talented Americans were pushed to their limit in overtime by Sweden in the quarterfinals. Brady Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, and Tage Thompson also scored in the win over Slovakia on Friday.
Canada have historically been the most dominant team in hockey during the Winter Olympics, and they will hope to avenge the women’s defeat in their gold medal game against the USA on Sunday.
Jon Cooper’s team have ridden their luck in the last two rounds, on both occasions bouncing back from losing positions. Friday’s semi-final against Finland was a nervy affair, with Sam Reinhart and Shea Theodore scoring to stage the fightback against the reigning Olympic champions.
The dramatic winner was scored in the final minute of the third period by Nathan MacKinnon. However, influential captain Sidney Crosby will miss the final.
Canada vs. USA Picks
Canada have been slightly fortunate in the previous two rounds, relying on their high-quality roster to battle back from losing positions. Another defensively poor showing isn’t likely to see them end the Winter Olympics with a gold medal now coming up against the offensively quality USA.
