Despite being massive underdogs in their opening game against Sweden, Italy really caught the attention for the level of their performance. Despite being outshot 22-60 against one of the favorites for a medal, Italy took a shock early lead, and were level at 2-2 in the second.
It was a statement performance by the host nation, and one that illustrates that they shouldn’t be overlooked in any game at this year’s Olympics. Luca Frigo’s early goal sent the arena in Milan into a frenzy, but even the most passionate fan would have admitted that it would be challenging to keep out the talented Swedes.
It ultimately worked out like that, with Sweden eventually claiming a 5-2 win. But, confidence levels will be high, and another shock start could be on the cards this Friday.
Slovakia delivered a statement performance for themselves on Wednesday, as they landed a shock 4-1 win over Finland on opening night. It was an excellent attacking display by the European nation, as the Finns struggled to deal with their pacey forward players.
Juraj Slafkovsky was the match hero for the Slovaks, scoring twice. Samuel Hlavaj also performed to a high standard, making 39 saves from 40 Finnish shots.

Italy almost threatened an upset against Sweden on opening night, but they are unlikely to replicate that against Slovakia. This will be a perfect opportunity for Slovakia to make it two wins from two at the Winter Olympics.
