The final spot in the next round of the Winter Olympics will be determined on Tuesday evening, as Sweden bid to avoid a shock departure and set up a showdown with the USA in the process.
However, it has been far from a smooth tournament to this point for the Swedes, despite being among the leading contenders to trouble Canada and the U.S. for a medal. Sweden finished third in Group B, winning games against Italy and Slovakia, but losing against Scandinavian rivals Finland.
If the nation is to get involved in the race for a medal, they will need to improve defensively, having allowed nine goals in their three games. But, their deep roster of NHL-quality players ensures that they should at least have the ability to book their spot in the next round.
Latvia will be the major outsiders to reach the next round of the tournament, but their international pedigree is highlighted after winning the bronze medal at the 2023 World Championships.
The nation have already enjoyed one of their best tournaments in terms of wins, with their showing in 2002 being the only previous Olympics where they have recorded more victories.
Latvia finished bottom of the Group C standings, suffering heavy losses against the U.S. and Denmark. However, a shock can’t be ruled out, as they defied lofty odds to overcome Germany on MD2.
