Game Preview
Canada showcased why they are the leading contenders to win the gold medal at this year’s Winter Olympics on Thursday, as they cruised to a 5-0 opening night win against Czechia.
Macklin Celebrini put the nation on their way, scoring the opening goal in the opening period. A deep roster of Canadian talent excelled against a largely untested rival at this level. Goalie Jordan Binnington still needed to be on his game, making 26 saves on his Olympic debut.
Connor McDavid also continued his excellent NHL scoring form at the Olympics, netting in the emphatic win. But, the bigger challenges will come for this exciting Canadian team, beginning against the Swiss on Friday.
Switzerland have put themselves into pole position to achieve a top-two finish in the Group A standings, and their performance against France on the opening night was incredibly eye-catching.
Timo Meier scored twice for the Swiss in the 4-0 win in Milan, with the New Jersey Devils Star showing efficiency after attempting only four shots.
Leonardo Genoni also looked like an assured figure in the Switzerland goal, making 27 saves. Other goals in the win for the Swiss were netted by J.J. Moser and Damien Riat.
Switzerland vs. Canada Picks
This will be a bigger challenge for Canada than Czechia were on night one. However, based on the depth within the Canadian roster, another big-scoring win could be a likely outcome.
