Game Preview
There appeared to be some opening night nerves within the U.S. camp on Thursday, as the team’s hunt for a first gold since 1980 started very slowly.
However, once the USA found their groove, they were too shot to hand for a poor Latvian outfit. Brock Nelson was a standout performer in the opening clash, scoring twice. A slow start wasn’t ideal for the U.S., but they will have the quality to ensure that this isn’t a likely major issue until the latter stages.
USA’s other goals in the dominant 4-1 success were scored by Tage Thompson and Elvis Merzilkins.
Denmark will be huge outsiders to threaten the medals at the Winter Olympics this year, despite Frederik Andersen showcasing his best in the nation’s goal during a 3-1 loss against Germany on Thursday.
Their lack of quality in offensive areas was telling, with their only goal being scored by Seattle Kraken star Oscar Molgaard. But, just as was the case against Germany, a U.S. side brimming with NHL talent is likely to overcome the Danes.
USA vs. Denmark Picks
USA’s slow start against Latvia meant that they weren’t as impressive as Canada on MD1, but the nation are likely to grow into the competition this winter. We fully expect another big-scoring win against a weak Denmark on Saturday.
