It has been a productive year back on the WTA Tour for American star Amanda Anisimova in 2025, highlighted by her run to the final at Wimbledon earlier this summer. The 23-year-old has shown flashes of her very best form throughout the season, including a victory in the Qatar Open.
Anisimova was excellent in the opening round of the US Open on Tuesday, as she breezed through in straight sets against Kimberly Birrell. For the second straight round, Anisimova will come up against an Australian opponent. Maya Joint has achieved a career-best year in Grand Slam events in 2025, reaching the first round for the first time at Wimbledon earlier in the summer.
She will be making her second appearance in the second round of the US Open this year, but she is yet to progress further than this stage in any Grand Slam event. The Australian showed great character in the opening round against Victoria Kasintseva, winning in straight sets. However, she will need to improve again to lay down a challenge to the talented Anisimova.
