Match Preview

Iga Swiatek is a five-time Grand Slam champion, but she has already achieved her best ever run at the Wimbledon Championships this summer. The Pole has typically struggled on the grass, but she has adapted excellently throughout the tournament this year to put herself in a promising position to win a sixth major.

In fact, Swiatek has appeared to get stronger and stronger as the tournament has progressed, beating Danielle Collins and Clara Tauson in rapid time in each of the last two rounds. Her win over the latter came in the previous round, as the Pole won a staggering 92% of the points on first serve.

Liudmila Samsonova has been one of the players who has gone under the radar at Wimbledon this summer. The 26-year-old is yet to drop a set at the competition, and prior to her round of 16 clash, she had lost just 13 games. In the previous round, she produced a battling display to overcome Spanish player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets.

However, she gave up 12 break-point opportunities in that clash, which would be a concern ahead of this match with Swiatek. A victory would see Samsonova reach a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time in her career.

Head-to-Head Record

Swiatek holds a 4-0 career record against Samsonova. The latest clash between the stars came in the round of 16 at last year’s US Open, with the Pole winning in straight sets.

Iga Swiatek vs. Liudmila Samsonova Picks

Samsonova deserves credit for reaching a first Grand Slam quarterfinal, but she could come unstuck against a higher-seeded rival on Wednesday. Swiatek’s improving performances make her a very dangerous player at this stage of the competition, and she could have her sights set on the final.
