Event Preview

The semi-finals at Roland Garros get underway on Thursday, as the final of the women’s competition will be determined. Aryna Sabalenka will be aiming to reach the final at the clay-court Grand Slam for the first time, while Iga Swiatek will be bidding for a fourth straight title in Paris, and fifth overall.

Despite preferring hard courts, it could be argued that Sabalenka has been the dominant player at Roland Garros this year. The 27-year-old is still yet to drop a set, and she has breezed through every challenge that she has encountered to this point.

Sabalenka was at her dazzling best in the quarterfinals, beating Qinwen Zheng in straight sets. The Belarusian registered six aces, and won an eye-catching 75% of the points on her second serve.

Swiatek has undeniably been the clay court queen in recent years, but her chances were written off by many after arriving at the Grand Slam in questionable form. But, she has made a mockery of those claims after reaching the semi-finals with minimal fuss.

The Pole saved her best performance of the tournament for the previous round, dominating Elina Svitolina to win in straight sets. Her ability on the clay surface makes her a standout selection for many against Sabalenka on Thursday.

Head-to-Head Record

Swiatek holds the advantage based on head-to-head meetings, winning five of the eight previous encounters. That includes three wins on the clay surface in four head-to-head clashes.

Aryna Sabalanka vs. Iga Swiatek Picks

Despite Sabalenka’s dominant performances to reach this stage, it is strange to see the proven clay performer as the outsider in the betting. For that reason, Swiatek could be the standout selection, as she is only growing into the competition as it progresses.
