Early 2027 Kentucky Derby Odds: Hughes Charges In After the Breeders’ Cup
The 2027 Kentucky Derby may seem months away, but the betting market for the opening race of the Triple Crown is already open.
A major market mover comes in the form of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Hughes, as the Bob Baffert-trained colt bids to become just the third horse to win the Juvenile and the Derby. But which other horses rank among the leading contenders before the final juvenile prep races at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, and Remington Park?
Early Kentucky Derby 2027 Odds
US sportsbooks haven’t opened their 2027 Kentucky Derby futures yet, but UK bookmakers have, so here’s an early look at how the field is shaping up. We’ll update these as soon as US markets open.
| Horse | Kentucky Derby 2027 Odds |
|---|---|
| U.S.S. Valor | +800 |
| Hughes | +1000 |
| American History | +1600 |
| Salahudin | +1600 |
| Powerline | +2000 |
| Fools Rush In | +2500 |
| Nevada | +2500 |
| Coach Pope | +3300 |
Early futures prices are as big as they’ll ever be for the horses who make it to Churchill Downs, but they come with risk. Futures bets are usually all-in, so if your horse doesn’t make the starting gate on the first Saturday in May, your bet is lost.

Kentucky Derby 2027 Contenders
U.S.S. Valor Remains the One to Beat
It could be argued that the most exciting Kentucky Derby prospect wasn’t even in action at the Breeders’ Cup. Trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey III raised eyebrows when he announced that his star juvenile U.S.S. Valor would skip the two-day meeting at Keeneland.
That decision denied us a showdown between the standout contenders on the East and West coasts. U.S.S. Valor has been almost perfect in his last two starts, and he showed how easily he handled a step up in distance when he beat Gaudreau by six lengths in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes. Still, the McGaughey colt has stamina to prove.
His sire, War Of Will, won the 2019 Preakness Stakes but failed to make his mark over further, finishing seventh in the Kentucky Derby. He was later dropped back to a mile and won the Maker’s Mark Mile on turf.
Hughes Strengthens His Derby Credentials
Three of the top contenders in the early Kentucky Derby odds ran in the Juvenile last Friday at Keeneland, with Hughes an impressive winner for Bob Baffert. The two-year-old had already won the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes, but the Juvenile was clearly a career-best effort, as he finished two lengths clear of American History.
There’s every chance a step up in distance will bring further improvement, given the way he found another gear to see off his rivals at Keeneland. His pedigree only strengthens his claims. He’s by Into Mischief, who has sired three Kentucky Derby winners, including this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic champion Sovereignty.
Of the others from the Juvenile field, Salahudin should be open to the most improvement. He put himself in an excellent position and traveled strongly before getting locked in a duel with American History at the top of the stretch. He lacked the gears to go with Hughes over the shorter trip and still looked green at times, but he should develop into a very strong three-year-old next season.
Powerline: Could a Flightline Colt Win the Kentucky Derby?
Memories of Flightline’s staggering Breeders’ Cup Classic victory came flooding back when the meeting returned to Keeneland this year. The strong start to his stud career could make him a leading sire of Kentucky Derby contenders with his very first crop.
Powerline could be an interesting contender to monitor in the early months of 2027, especially after showing a devastating turn of foot to break his maiden over seven furlongs on the Championship Saturday undercard at Keeneland.
What’s New About the Triple Crown Series in 2027?
One of the biggest changes in modern horse racing history will shake up the schedule in 2027, as the move away from the traditional Triple Crown begins. The Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes will remain key championship races, but the Preakness Stakes has lost a little of its prestige, as it will be run on a Sunday for the first time in its history in May 2027.
The main reason is the launch of the new Thoroughbred Championship Series, which carries a $5 million prize pool awarded on points accumulated throughout the series. Other races on the schedule include the Matt Winn Stakes, the Jim Dandy Stakes, the Travers, and an unnamed championship race at Churchill Downs in September.
