Race Preview

The 2000 Guineas is the first of five Classics staged in Britain, with runners needing to claim success in the Derby and St Leger to land the Triple Crown. Newmarket hosts the opening Classic of the season, with a mile covered on the Rowley course. Aidan Oā€™Brien holds a very strong hand for the race this year, as the Irish trained chases a record-extending eleventh success in the 2000 Guineas.

Auguste Rodin certainly appears to be his standout star, and the three-year-old has already been tipped to become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Nijinsky in 1970.

The runner will make his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket, having won three from four starts, with his previous two wins coming in stakes company. The latest of those could be the strongest form line, as he beat Epicetus by over three lengths over a mile to win the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy. That performance scored an official rating of 109.Ā

Stablemate Little Big Bear is the leading rival according to the betting, as he boasts a higher official rating. The Oā€™Brien runner has won each of his previous four starts, which includes victories at the Curragh in each of the last two. He is yet to run over a mile, but his latest success over six furlongs by seven lengths does highlight that he should get the extended distance.

Chaldean will likely be the mount of Frankie Dettori. The three-year-old unseated the Italian at the gate at Newbury on April 22, which would be a concern. However, he is one of few with winning experience at Newmarket, albeit over seven furlongs in the G1 Dewhurst.

Dark Horse Contender

Silver Knott represents last yearā€™s winning connections, and he should go well for Charlie Appleby after beating Epicetus by a neck over a mile at Newmarket last year. However, as an outsider, we are very sweet on Slipofthepen.

It would be a welcome winner on Coronation Day for King Charles, as the three-year-old is a runner for the King. He made a dominant reappearance at Kempton on April 10, as he landed success over a mile at Kempton. That was his second straight win over the distance, and he posted an RPR of 101 from that performance.

2000 Guineas 2023 Picks

Auguste Rodin is a very special contender, and he is highly regarded by connections. He looks the one to beat in the race, and that could set him up for a shot at history at Epsom next month. However, we also like Slipofthepen for those looking for a bigger-priced selection.
