Manhattan Stakes: Betting Preview

Captivating action on the turf is set for Saratoga this weekend, as the G1 Manhattan Stakes is due off at 6:11 PM ET. Deterministic will be back to defend the race he won 12 months ago, and the five-year-old could be overpriced based on his excellent return effort.

The five-year-old rallied to land the G3 Fort Marcy Stakes, beating Battle of Normandy by just under a length. This step back up in distance shouldn’t faze him after previously winning this race 12 months ago. His consistency should be respected, and he holds obvious claims.

Rhetorical will be the leading contender based on the odds for the William Walden team. The five-year-old is a two-time stakes winner, and he made a striking impression on his return to action at Churchill Downs when easily putting three lengths between himself and the field in the G1 Bourbon Turf Classic. Still looks to be progressing, and is unexposed over this distance.

Test Score has been a frustrating horse to follow, as the Graham Motion-trained runner clearly has ability. However, for every performance like his win in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf, he throws in a poor run like the one when eighth in the G1 Bourbon Turf Classic. Talented enough to win, but his inconsistency makes him untrustworthy.

Make Me King is a fascinating international raider this weekend. The son of Dark Angel has won five from 25 career starts, and was second on his U.S. debut behind Rhetorical last time. Has mixed it with the best throughout his career, but he could be best suited by a mile.

One Stripe could be considered for exotics, with the four-year-old having a very consistent record, including when second in both the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf and G1 Maker’s Mark Mile this term. Integration is also high quality on his day, but returns from a long layoff this weekend.

Manhattan Stakes Picks

French-raider Bright Picture could be the form play this weekend. The five-year-old finished within three lengths of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Daryz at Longchamp on his last start, proving that he is of the highest respect at Grade One level.

The Andre Fabre runner has won four from nine starts in stakes company, including victories over slightly further than this weekend’s trip in the G2 Prix d’Harcourt and G2 Prix Eugene Adam. Also finished within two lengths of the world’s highest rated horse, Calandagan, in the Prix Francois Mathet and Prix Noailles.
